Record a TTRPG game with your own device

Place a phone, computer or voice recorder near your TTRPG table, check the sound, then export one file.

Choose this method

Use a phone, laptop or voice recorder when everyone is around the same table.

For a remote game, use the Discord bot or follow Record a remote game with OBS instead.

This method produces one file containing every voice. It provides no individual opt-out during the game, and a single voice cannot be removed separately after recording. Tell everyone present and obtain their agreement before you begin.

Place and test the device

  1. Place the device near the centre of the table, on a stable surface and away from speakers, fans, glasses and papers.
  2. Turn off audible notifications and plug in the device if the game may be long.
  3. Ask each person to speak for a few seconds at their usual volume.
  4. Listen back with headphones.

Check that every voice is understandable, nearby voices do not clip and table noise does not cover the conversation. Also check the battery and available storage.

Record and export

Start recording shortly before the game and let it run without interruption. When the game ends, stop it and export the original file without sending it through a messaging service that may reduce its quality.

VoLog accepts one MP3, WAV, M4A, WEBM or OGG file, up to 1 GiB and up to 8 hours long. If your application creates another format, export a compatible copy instead of renaming its extension.

Then follow Create a Session from an audio file. Keep the original file until transcription is complete.
